The Park Service began charging rent and only permitted Indigenous people to remain if their family members worked in the Valley-part of a plan, as Mark David Spence writes in Dispossessing the Wilderness, to "give park officials unprecedented control of Yosemite's Native community and, over time, achieve the full removal of Indians from the park."
Over a decade before, the Park Service had relocated the remaining Indigenous residents from their old village to the new site of fifteen government-built cabins, all smaller than 450 square feet.
